HEART OF SURRY HILLS

Art Project

Community Art Project

The Surry Hills community is invited to take part in creating an enormous art installation of multi-coloured felt hearts, reflecting on the theme the ‘Heart of Surry Hills.’
Participants will be asked to reflect on what is the heart of Surry Hills to them, writing their answer on paddle pop sticks, joined to the felt hearts.
The collaborative art project encourages neighbours and locals to meet, share stories and make new friends – through a series of heart making workshops, designed to connect communities.
This project is presented by Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre and artist Kasane Low.

Kasane Low is a Sydney based artist, living and working on Gadigal Wangal lands and holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Sydney.

Low has been working with the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre, its community and volunteers since 2016, initiating community engagement arts projects across Surry Hills – connecting communities, encouraging neighbours and locals to meet, share stories and make new friends – through a series of art workshops and the creations of major public art installations.

Low is widely acclaimed for her installations and performance photography and won the People’s Choice Award for coveted Art on Paper Prize, and the Emerging prize for the installation Thousand Yards of Gold Thread. She has participated in international art projects in Paris, Berlin and China and has previously exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe.
